Again, this is just a political aside. Feel free to breeze on past.
Much has been made of the “historic” election of Barack Obama. Will Smith has declared that America is no longer a racist country. (Though it’s apparently still OK to blast whites, or proudly proclaim that “My President is Black”.) I’ve spent enough time in the deep South to know that we’re seeing a lot of kool-aid being consumed on that count.
Still, it is better than it once was. I can’t complain too much. It’s just…
What I’d consider “historic” is an election where a “minority” member was elected, and nobody noticed or cared. They just got elected because they were the right person for the job.
To me, that’s the promise of Martin Luther King Jr.’s “Dream”: to be judged by character, rather than charade; by substance rather than style; by principle rather than polish. *shrug*
It is no wonder that Barack Obama is welcomed as a savior. He seems indeed to be a very capable man. That such a person could make it in the old boys network of politics is a testament that he is not just a very skilled orator.
The hype in the black community is probably just like the Bavarians and German going nuts as a German got elected as successor of John Paul II, we should not take it too serious.
That racism is going back… is just not true. Higher strata of society abandoned this evil concept ages ago, in most countries over the world, in favor of a capitalist meritocracy.
What I personally regret is that it seems to be the fate of democrat presidents to spend most of their time repairing the damage that republican presidents did to the country!!!
Barack Obama got elected with high hopes, perhaps people will demand too much, the impossible.
Random thought, how can Osama bin Laden fight versus an America under Barack Obama… he is a good guy, after all. It is VERY hard to justify stupid bombings and terror against America with such a reasonable and popular president…!!!
OK, before I start deviating too much from the topic, my famous last words: I am probably the only person on earth that somehow does not like Will Smith. I liked him in Men in Black, but in all movies after that one, and in all interviews, I found him rather shallow.
I cherry picked Smith’s comment because it seems to embody a sentiment I hear often.
I’m not really even commenting on Pres. Obama’s policy or potential; that’s the point. The press is falling over themselves proclaiming that this is a historic election because of his skin color. To me, that they even bother to point it out shows that we’re not yet a colorblind meritocracy.
