It’s not quite the same dynamic as Rock-Paper-Scissors. Specifically, I think Rock is losing this one, and while it looks like Trees lost some previous rounds, they are going strong at present:
I think I’m going to place my bets on Water, though. It seems to have better long-term potential.
Gratuitous closeup:
I took these pictures a few weeks ago in Provo Canyon, a few miles from home. I was going to post them earlier with the other tree photos, but I forgot… so hey, bonus belated blog post!

Awesome photo!
I only own an ages old 2 MP camera, maybe I am compensating by taking tons of screenshots.
I’m always awed at the power possessed by trees & plants, and how they can crack pavement and shatter rocks through nothing more than constant, relentless pressure.
That’s when the meteor struck.
Clearly a harvesting node.
What??
Longasc, oh, I hear you there. I take *way* too many screenshots.
Cap’n, it really is amazing what plants do over time. I love digging around in old towns to see what time has done. It’s almost melancholy at times, but a great testament to persistence and impermanence.
Klep, you’re one of those kids who played Paper, Rock, Scissors, Dynamite, right? Those were always the best games.
Callan, that’s the first time in a long time I’ve had to stifle a laugh quite so violently. Meanie. (OK, not really a meanie. That was awesome.)
Awesome photos
I miss doing photography actually. I used to bum around with a friend of mine taking photos with an old SLR. Was great fun and surprisingly some of them come out OK
I tried to explain “Elvis, Chicken, Pickle” to someone the other day. Remember that game?
That picture is absolutely awesome, by the way. It’s insane that things like that happen! I mean, how random for a tree to be growing in a rock!
Oh, yes, I remember Elvis, Chicken, Pickle. It works, I promise!
I really need to go take some shots of that in different seasons. I missed the best Autumn shots for it, but I can get some other ones. I wish I could make a living taking pictures like that.
Oh, and Gordon, I love SLR photography; I love to tinker with the settings. I’ve been spoiled by digital cameras, though; I don’t want to go back to film cameras. (Though I had fun with the darkroom stuff. I can do B&W darkroom work, but I don’t have a lab at home, or hundreds of dollars to blow on film, paper and chemicals. Oh, and I’d rather have a steampunk metallurgy workshop anyway. Alas.)
If you pull the tree from the rock, do you become the king of the tree people?
