OK, I caved and jumped back into World of Warcraft thanks to that absurd Scroll of Resurrection thing. It’s kind of a big deal. Sorta. If the conspiracies are to be believed. (I still say they should sell level capped characters.)
Me? I just used it to make an insta-80 Shaman, a Dwarf I’m calling Rumblethump, so I could use Far Sight to take more esoteric screenshots. We’ll see what I come up with.
…that’s probably not what Blizzard intended, but hey, I finally used one of my 30-day time codes from the VISA rewards card, so that’s less of a chance of me losing out on that value in the eventual shift to a glorious subscription-free WoW. Anyone for buying my retail 60-day card?
In the meantime, I might get my “main” past level 78 and poke into Icecrown, then finally tame myself a Venomhide Raptor mount. Yeah, tourist priorities. Then I’ll take a lot of pictures.
So there.
There is a certain comfort to WoW. It isn’t my main game, but I still play it once in a while.
60 Day time card? Sorry, I am one of those people who is already locked in for a year.
I think there’s enough about WoW to like to merit the occasional visit. There’s enough to dislike to make those visits only occasional. *shrug*
Besides, there are places I haven’t seen yet, and screenshots to capture.
It’s a bit annoying that the scroll came out so soon after I started playing again. I wish there was a “Scroll of Keep Playing.”
Indeed. There’s always going to be someone hosed by this sort of thing. One more argument for not changing it, at least not so drastically.
STO does “veteran rewards” for having been subbed for 100, 200, 300 days and so on. That’s a nice little trick, and I’m surprised that WoW doesn’t do something like that for the “keep playing” rewards.
Puzzle Pirates reduces the price of subs after you’ve played for a while, two years, I think. That’s another good route, though it does mess with the revenue stream.
I wouldn’t say I’ve been hosed. I’ve not lost anything. I’d just have gotten more if I’d waited a month or two, but I didn’t have the information to make that decision, so it’s not as if this creates a “wait two months to resub” incentive. Maybe it creates a “wait for multiple months/quarters of subscriber losses” incentive.
I’m still a bit burned out on WoW from my last stint there. If I do sub up again in the future I’m not likely to want to skip to 80, since the leveling game is the part of WoW that I mainly enjoy.
I love leveling… but I really like being able to fly. That new Shaman of mine lets me check out high level Alliance areas and tinker with Shaman mechanics I’d otherwise have to play months to get to. If the game was subless, I’d totally spend a lot of time noodling around in the leveling areas. I’d have spent 100 hours doing that instead of playing Torchlight.
I’m just not wired for raiding, though. If I level cap either the Shaman or my main Druid, I’ll just use them to wander around and maybe solo some old dungeons.
It lets you make a max level character? Do you get to keep them forever (assuming you sub) at max level?
It’s not fully capped, it’s level 80 and they unlock Cataclysm for you, so you have 5 more levels to go. Still, as near as I can tell, you keep it. You also get that whether or not you sub. It just comes with accepting the ‘Scroll. Subbing just helps the person who referred you.
I’m still playing WoW too but in a far more relaxed way nowadays, – I just noticed the gnolls have really cute outfits! I have the year pass. I was planning to play the year out anyway so it made sense, and I have more than one account too, now inactive – but I’m not tempted by the scroll. It’s only now that I’m getting to enjoy some parts of the game (like gnoll outfits) – before everything was very rushed and competitive and focussed (enjoyed that then though). Being funnelled to endgame is…well not such an interesting option for me at now that I’m more into enjoying what early and lateral content is left. WoW is my MMO comfy old slippers game!
