I haven't watched chuck, but it sounds like a third category 'The authors have a mortgage to pay off and are hoping for a sequel/another series'

One measure is simply embeded in the viewer themselves - whether they have changed their mind on something. Like maybe they had certain attitudes about womens roles, but a series changes that. That doesn't even have to happen at the end - it might happen in the middle somewhere.

Otherwise, if you're just looking for entertainment - well, endings don't matter. One entertainment ends - you'll look for another. So why do endings matter? (except perhaps in how they may spoil how entertaining a series is?)

Though the thing about a concrete ending is that really the only way to do so is to confirm how the viewer already thinks.

I like a definite ending: This happened and this is the result. But I know it's not truly over. Unless we're talking about the Final Defeat of Sin and Satan and the Final Eternal Kingdom of Heaven, we know that history has not ended. The Death Star blew up and the Emperor is dead and Vader is redeemed and Luke and Co. saved the day, but we know that's not the end of the Star Wars story. Though the next stage of the story involves galactic prepression to put down the insurrections resulting fromt he death of the Emperor. Or maybe that's actually an abstract ending.

I don't like completely vague endings and tons of loose ends. But I don't like the "book is shut" sort of ending, where everything is tied up and all done. Those end up feeling forced.
