What exactly is a “Ranger”, anyway? One who ranges? One with a home on the range? One who rang?
Whatever the case, I’m really looking forward to playing a Ranger in Guild Wars 2.
Is it bad form to want to name my bear “Little John“? R.I.P., Phil Harris.
I are literal today.

Damned if I’m going to play a glorified gamekeeper for some absentee aristo! No! My ranger will be a pirateninja sliding through the trees steal all ur goldz kill some banditz terror.
WITH A PET.
Just sayin.’
*chuckle*
I should have known you’d set me straight on Rangers. 🙂 Thanks! (Oh, and I love that etymology site. Yummy stuff!)
I sure love ’em… but yeah, I’m thinking more “pirateninja” than game warden.
The rangers in the GW2 video fired arrow barrages like the Russians their Katyusha launchers.
I am pretty sure Rangers will be fun to play. Heck, they even get their pet shark for the underwater parts! 🙂
I prefer to play a Necromancer and my favorite hero teammates and other players are Rangers and other Necromancers. GW1 Rangers are extremely versatile, I also like my Spear Ranger amazon style builds for Alliance Battles.
I really hope they get the Necromancers done well! Soul Reaping was initially often totally underestimated and called crap, later on it was called the “most broken and imba primary attribute in the whole game”. So much about player perception, eh? 🙂
I also needed almost a year till Factions and Sorrow’s Furnace released to “get” into the class. It was an acquired taste. But what happened? I noticed I am much better buffing and debuffing stuff than whacking it myself, it also worked better for solo play with heroes and henchies.
The result was that my long honed warrior skills which take some practice became rusty and my Necromancer became my new main. It was around the time when I got a bit tired of GW after having done it all as they also managed to make Blood Magic really viable.
I keep my fingers crossed for ArenaNet. They really try to advance the genre with fresh new stuff, where Bioware somehow feels to have fallen under the foot of EA and lost all creativity. SWTOR did not really impress me, it look so much like more WoW with a Bioware touch to me that I am rather disappointed (so far – maybe it turns out to be better. I also underestimated Dragon Age initially, first thought was “if they need so much blood to make it appeal to people it must be crap!”).
Wow, the more I see about GW2, the more I like. I used to play a Dervish, and loved it. Strange, but I even got into the PvP more than I have in World of Warcraft.
The whole premise of GW1, skill-over-gear, still impresses me.
I hope this comes out for Mac…
My ranger in GW1 currently has a black widow spider named Crunchy. Crunchy gets a lot of ‘lols’ during PvP in RA. Pet names can really make the difference 😉
@longasc I have to admit that the tiny bit of necro I got to try out in the “find a second prof!” tutorial whetted my appetite. I loved raising the mobs I’d just killed to help me fight the next one, hehe.
Pfft now that’s a silly question!
A ranger is an Aragorn clone!
…at least, it seems that’s where most of them started. >.> <.<
