Perpetuum looks like a fusion of BattleTech and EVE. “EVE OnLand“, perhaps. I’m not sure if that’s a fair assessment, so I’m going to go tinker for a little while with their open beta (which starts today!), assuming they let me. I’m looking forward to it, anyway; I’ve wanted to play a good Mech-flavored MMO for a while now. (It turns out that Project of Planets wasn’t terribly impressive, but then, it was still under construction when I last checked in. Maybe it rocks now.)
Now that I’ve got WoW out of my system (thanks, BBB! Screenshots thisaway…), it’s time to see what I can do with some stompy Mechs. It’s a subscription game, so I may never have a better chance to see what it’s like.
I beta-ed Perpetuum a few months ago. I liked it but it was so like Eve, my main game at the time, that I didn’t want to play both. I also found the crafting a bit too hard to get into as a newbie. I made several false starts and then still couldn’t quite figure out what I was doing.
I hope you enjoy it. There’s a good game in there somewhere the other side of the learning cliff.
Yeah, that’s what I’m expecting, to be honest. Since I’m at least moderately interested in EVE, though, I figure it can’t hurt to give it a spin. Thanks for the comment! I figured EVE vets might have a thing to three to say about the game. 😉

It sounds a little too much like EVE, but way less polished. This was kind of funny to see a Dev ask:
“It was not my intention to offend anyone. I was merely curious what is it that makes the majority of players just sit on their comfortable pile of robots and just go out shooting dumb NPCs. This is not what this game is mainly about and if this is your impression then we are indeed doing something very wrong.”
Which is what most people in EVE do in Hi-sec.
It would be interesting to see how you do. You should also try the free trial of EVE for balance.
“You should also try the free trial of EVE for balance.”
Very true. I *have* been meaning to…
And yes, it always surprises me to see devs underestimate the PvE carebear audience.
Oooh, gonna check out their site. I love Mechs ever since I first played Mech Warrior. Something about controlling a giant robot really appeals to me 🙂
Here we go with Mechs again! Still waiting for the ultimate fusion of mechs and zombies though…

In all seriousness though, is the next iteration in development? Since cloning WoW has failed for everyone, clone the models that have worked outside of WoW (a la Eve). Reading through the site it does seem like Eve on planet. I haven’t played it yet though, so apologies for the assumption.
I loved many aspects of Eve but hated the real time skill advancement. You have to log in every 24 hours to continue ‘progressing’. As much as I applaud the lack of importance in the skill aspect, and them doing something different, that part just never jived with me.
It’s the same assumption I’m making, Isey, so if it’s wrong, so am I. I have an open beta registration pending, but haven’t heard back. Not sure what’s going on.
Anyway, as for skills, it sounds like they accrue skill points according to how long your account is alive. You don’t appear to need to log in to earn points. *shrug*
