If WoWHead is to be believed, World of Warcraft has finally seen the light of day and is allowing armor customization.
I’m still deciding just how snarky to be about it… “it’s about time”, “welcome to the twenty first century”, “better late than never”, “too little too late”… it’s all rattling around in there somewhere. In the end, though, I just think that it’s a good idea (I have for a while), and it will be interesting to see what happens.

Edited to add: Gwaendar’s excellent writeup of the (superior, I think) LOTRO system for comparison
Yeah, seems like this is a bit late. I already got rid of a lot of the cool cosmetic stuff I was holding onto years ago to free up space for crafting stuff.
The system seems overly complicated, though. Why not just have the appearance slots like other games have instead of having to visit a certain NPC and pay gold (if I’m understanding the announcement post right.) Seems they’re really overthinking and overengineering this change.
Anyway, I don’t see this drawing me back, even if I love cosmetic options in other games. Maybe it’ll make current fans happy, though.
I’ve thrown out or sharded a lot of gear that I’m starting to miss with this announcement. I wonder it retro raiding is going to get popular.
I think it’s stupid to tie the option to gear only in your inventory. How many subscribers did WoW pick up in Wrath? A lot. How many of those grinded old raids for early tier sets? A small percentage I believe. It seems like an option made for the hoarders and RP’ers mostly, and a forced grind for anyone else wanting to have the gear look of somthing they either never had or had to get rid of to create bank/bag space. I like the thought, but the execution I think is poorly thought out.
Sometimes I think the way a mmorpg distinguishes itself from it’s competition is in how it’s unpleasant – kind of like how a dominatrix is unpleasant.
Does armour customisation help, or does it enable a little more your customers to start thinking about visiting the other dominatrix’s, since they are doing the same sort of thing?
“You will finally be able to retain your dwarf’s racial gun bonus while appearing with all the splendor and elegance of a bow wielder (or at least the relative silence of one).”
What Dwarf player in his right mind wants his avatar to be seen using a Bow?
Dwarfs use guns, and maybe Crossbows in a pinch, but definitely NOT Bows. Not unless we can transmogrify them to look like a Gun 😉
Maybe that’s what he actually meant. You can finally give into the darkside and equip that bow you’ve been carrying around but never actually used despite its superior Stats because…Duh! Hello? Bow!
Now that I don’t play anymore, typical! =(
TBH this is lousy timing on their part and no, not just in my case. speaking of being late…
I also second the criticism about them over-complicating things. and the “legendary exception” is simply nonsensical.
